Taking It To The Minimum

Singapore-based Summerhaus D'zign declutters a family home.

After many years of living in the Maplewoods condominium on Bukit Timah Road and with their children grown up, the owners decided to engage local interior design firm Summerhaus D'zign to revamp their living space. They wanted to reduce the clutter they had accumulated over the years and transform their abode into a sleek, modern apartment.

Partners Larry Lim and Jess Koh conceived a hidden storage unit inspired by irregular geometric shapes for the living room. Using additional grooves on doors to blend the gaps between cabinets into one homogeneous design feature, the unit allowed the family to store their bigger items such as guitar cases and camera stands. The TV console was custom-designed to keep the myriad cables tucked neatly out of view. Large panelled mirrors in the dining area expanded the feel of the space.

While Lim and Koh used a minimalistic design theme for the most of the apartment, they decided to use a variety of textures and colours in the three bathrooms. Fitted entirely with different marble and granite, the bathrooms provide a contrast with the stark white cabinets and walls of the main living area.

Summerhaus D'zign was nominated for the Italian A'Design Awards 2014/2015 for their design work in this private residence.
